The SIMMAP Research Group, led by Dr. Talha Khan, is pleased to announce the publication of a new journal article in The International Journal of Advanced Manufacturing Technology, in collaboration with Dr. Rajeev Nair from Wichita State University

This work presents a novel approach to thermal management for next-generation eVTOL propulsion systems through the development of bi-modal capillary wick structures fabricated using a high-voltage press-sinter method (PSM).
The study focuses on designing and manufacturing advanced porous wick structures with controlled porosity and permeability, enabling enhanced two-phase heat transfer and significantly improved cooling performance in high-power electric systems. The proposed manufacturing approach demonstrates the ability to reduce fabrication time by an order of magnitude compared to conventional methods, while allowing flexible design and rapid prototyping of complex geometries.
Through a combination of experimental fabrication, parametric optimization using Design of Experiments (DOE), and detailed characterization, the research establishes clear relationships between process parameters and resulting material properties such as porosity, wettability, and structural integrity. The findings contribute toward the development of scalable, low-cost, and high-performance thermal management solutions, with direct relevance to aerospace, electrified propulsion, and sustainable energy systems.
